Why ‘The Break Side?’

Now that you’ve familiarized yourself a bit with the game of Ultimate, you’re probably wondering why we decided to call this adventure ‘The Break Side.’ If you watched the highlight video closely, you’ll notice that the thrower almost always has a defender very near them, allowing them to only throw to one side of the field: the open side. This defender, called the mark, wants the thrower to move the disc this direction so they get stuck on the sideline with no where else to go. Alternatively, the side of the field the mark is preventing the thrower from is called the break side. It’s a little more difficult and risky to throw around the mark, but the offense opens itself up to many more opportunities.

If we think of our lives as an Ultimate field, we too have an open side and a break side. The open side is the direction we’ve always been pushed; the side that favors financial security and stability and the typical path for most people. The break side represents the risky side of life, but the one that may have far greater rewards. Forgoing our jobs and the stability that comes with them is not the easy or typical path, but we feel that is the right one at this point in our lives. So join us as we hit the open road to experience all that life has to offer us on the break side.
